CASE STUDY

As an employee of an insurance company i gave a presentation on the insurance policies provided by the company. As soon as I finished the presentation a person stood up, criticized the presentation and then started crying before I could formulate the response. I regained my mental strength and thought about the possible reasons of such a dramatic behaviour.

The possible reasons for such behaviour can be:

·         He has previously encountered such company which may not be genuine but a fraud company. That company may have taken his valuable assets and might have run away. The person`s life time belongings might have gone. He may be in grief of that incident.

·         The person may have faced harassment by other insurance companies who must have not given him his due amount during the time of genuine need and verbally or physically abused her. The remembrance of incident must have made him crying.

·         The person may have specific grudge against the respective company as previous encounter with the same company may have had bad experience.

·         The person may have been involved himself in any fraudulent scheme instead of directly making contact with genuine insurance provider.

·         That person may be mentally unsound and is not in his control.

·         He may deliberately try to make other beneficiaries not to avail the benefit of the policy.

·         The person may be mind washed by someone else so as to create nuisance after the presentation.

·         The person, generally makes, and is in the habit of making such kind of noises.

·         The person may have been totally unaware of the insurance policies and have negative attitude towards all kind of companies.

·         The person may have had earlier seen me somewhere else where the presentation may be entirely different in nature so he must have misunderstood something.

 Ø  To handle the situation

First i shall make him stop crying, will offer a chair to sit, let him drink some water and then politely asking for his problem even if the person is louder. Will listen him properly and would ask any other person if he or she also harbors any such grievances for an insurance company. Then i would let to know from other enrollees if the person crying is mentally sound or not. If not I shall make him stop crying and will listen him and would pacify him. If he is of sound mind I shall explain him what attitude he must have towards the company and how some companies are there really for benefit and betterment of poor people.
Even if the person does it deliberately or has the habit of creating nuisance, I would have very humane approach towards him so as to keep maintaining the trust among other enrollees. Its very necessary to explain him about the benefits of joining insurance schemes .The real thing lies in persuading him and making him take part in the latest schemes of the company.
Its not matter of 2 days of my work. It is more based on the prestige of the company so I shall do everything, I can, to pacify the person and shall tell him about his misunderstanding.
After pacifying him and making him to sit among other enrollees, I shall briefly explain the whole process again and in the end will give the answers of each and every question raised by the person so that audience does not have any doubt in its mind and do not get swayed by this incident. Will call the person in the end and will ask him if he still has any doubt or grievances regarding the company or its work.
If he is not satisfied I will make him satisfy in front of everyone and then will ask if any other person has any doubt in his mind. Only after clearing all the doubts of each and every person, I will wind up my presentation on a positive note. Within next 2days I shall try to gain as much trust as possible.  So that people remember my presentation not the incident of crying person.

EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK

Review of company`s employee handbook
·         The company has a detailed list of all the requirements by an employee as far as behaviour or code of conduct of an employee is concerned, it has the safety features, the person has to follow; the ethical behaviour needed to maintain with the customers
·         All employees need to be aware and comply with the privacy policies of the company so that confidential or private material is not released.
·         The company provides the mechanism for resolving any grievances amicably.
·         Employees need to report to the suitable authority as soon as the ethical laws are violated by the colleagues.
·         Employees are required to respect and abide by the laws concerned.
·         Employees are needed to maintain confidentiality in the work. If any work or file is to be shared, the employee can do so only after talking to the manager.
·         Company abides by the entire environmental and ethical standards which an employee needs to maintain along with maintaining the principle of sustainability.
·         The company unfortunately does not provide any specific detail on absenteeism but it is implicit in the document that an employee must be serious to his job.
·         Employee can not use credit card for purposes other than his own personal use. No spouses or relatives can use it under any circumstances.

Basically the code of conduct provides for all the instructions and ethics, the employee has to follow. It gives the wholesome picture of rules and regulations for an employee which is easily comprehendible.
Ø  To make a successful career in the company and to be an exceptional employee I shall
·   Always be within time even if it is not being mentioned specifically
·   Not ever use company`s assets for private use.
·   Not take frequent leaves and explain the colleagues importance of being the regular in the company
·   Not promote nepotism.
·   There would be no conflict of interest. If any such issue will arise I will keep myself away from such work and will report to the manager.
·   Not disclose any confidential information without asking the manager. Whenever doubt arises that the given information is confidential or not, I shall visit the manager first.
·  Maintain exceptional harmony among all the colleagues.
·  Abide by all the laws concerned.
·  I would follow the regulation that if a law is violated by any other colleague I shall report to the suitable authority without compromising genuineness of the company.
·  Complete my work on time and there would be quality work.

Ø  Consequences of following the rules and regulations
Without following these standards I may find myself in legal complications. The company may be at the risk of getting entangled in legal battle with bad consequences for each stakeholder.

I can be thrown out of the company if I do not maintain the necessary standards.  I can be debarred from working in any other company also.

But if these steps are followed the employee can work in the company for long time and build his or her career in the relative field. These are the steps each and every person needs to follow to build his career as an exceptional employee. Long time work generates reputation and prestige which will boost up your working potential, thus ,your career.

ARTICLE BASED ON CURRENT NEWS

Main points
The case between an employee and his employer regarding unpaid leave during her pregnancy threw a new light on the topic. The defendant UPS ltd. said, it has not discriminated with woman and did not provide her accommodation as the pregnancy did not allow her to lift even the light weight packages. Plaintiff said as she was not provided accommodation and a paid leave so she was discriminated against other limited persons, like disabled, injured on the job etc. The court rejected both the arguments and shifted the onus on the employer, to prove not guilty of discrimination.

Laws violated
Pregnancy Discrimination act was being violated according to the plaintiff. This act provides paid leave to the pregnant workers. Also the issue of Supreme Court ruling was raised, in which court said that pregnancy discrimination did not qualify as sex discrimination as all the women are not pregnant.

Author`s position
The author is basically not in the favour of UPS Company as it has given the statement of a jurist in which he says that this is not discrimination, rather she is being kept on equality with other employees.
The author himself says that it will be a guidance case for such type of cases in future.

My position
Court is right at its position as it has given verbal access to both sides and ruled in favour of a woman discriminated against due to her pregnancy. It will be guidance for other such type of cases as the writer mentioned and will be helpful in building just and equitable society.

Such type of cases take the debate to the next level specially in today`s arena when women are becoming assertive for their rights and demanding equal pay for equal work. in such a scenario this case can be a milestone not only for equal pay but also equal rights.

SUSTAINABILITY

Contents

·       Review of the resource use documents
·       Review of policies of opera house related to sustainability
·       Audience feedback review
·       Review of resource efficient targets
·       Preparation of written report
·       submission

Ø   Review of resource use documents

I implemented a plan to have sustainability increase in an organisation named as opera house now its time to review the outcome of the plan here are some details provided in the documents which are maintained on monthly basis. Generally the report says
·       Efficency of the electricity uses increase
·       Use of gas decreased but not by 4% on month to month basis
·         Waste generation decreased
·         Increase in reused and recycled material
·         Less and effective water use
·         Still some harmful products are used and released into the environment  which affect local population. This may lead ultimately to legal consequences.
·         Less use of use and throw material
·         Overall the material used per show decreased by2%
·         Reduced economic cost so need less budget amount on wastage

Ø     Review of the environmental sustainability policy of the establishment

The policy of the opera house aims to use the resources wisely, motivating the visitors and follow appropriate management principles. Simultaneously it wants to increase social, economic, cultural and environmental benefits.
It is analysed that policy has lacunae as far as target indicators are concerned. It does not divide the strategy for degradable and non degradable products. There is no separation of non-reusable and reusable materials.
Policy is not widely elaborated and communicated effectively. It do not strike on all the sources environmental pollution.
So revise the policy and make separate disposal plan for all the types of waste generated, based on degradation and source material, effectively communicate the policy to all the stakeholders.
Corporate information policy documents are reviewed and revised. Corporate social responsibility increased. All the legal and ethical considerations are taken up.

Audience feedback

1 in every 5 person showed interest in participating in sustainable management policy made. The people from rural background showing little interest. people are not properly engaged with. There is no proper channelisation for the audience to vent their motivation zeal.
After the show, audience is to be engaged by maintaining regular contact so that they reduce the use of resources in the organization and generate less waste. People are more concerned with sustainability practices in today`s world. It attracts the audience but to sustain participative approach they are to be engaged time and again. For this shows are to be more frequent. Special Classes also can be conducted.
Employees more enthusiastic which is reflected in their performance so their bonus can be increased or provide the incentives to continue the performance.
Investor ready to further invest in sustainability practices. Number of people attending the shows increased
Huge support and funding by environmental activists, but there is some legal hurdles.

Ø     Reviewing the resource efficiency targets

Target
Implemented action
lacunae
Reduction in gas use
Less wastage
Not properly executed
Increase in efficiency of use of electricity
Automatic switch on and off electric things
No proper maintenance of the electronics
Less waste generation
Toxic products use decreased
More usage ofmaterial by volume
Increase in recycled material
More recycle plants
No. of plants not up to the mark

Written report preparation
·       The data says that electricity consumption dets increased in the months from February, then start reducing. If the data is compared on year to year basis, electricity consumption is decreasing but not in a consistent manner so the target of 2% y-o-y decrease is difficult to meet which is shown in the line chart made.

·       Based on the data from task 2, gas consumption is decreased by 3%
·       Less waste generation but more recycling
·       1000cusec less water used
·       Audience using less resources
·       Data should be maintained on weekly basis also which will provide the data on non work days also.
·       Recycling and waste disposal require  remedial action to separate the biodegradable and non- biodegradable waste
·       Reduce the point sources of pollution
·       Increase the speed of recycling life cycle
